BreathMinder® - a memory tool to "coach" your breathing.

Proper breathing is an important element of reducing feelings of fear, depression, and anxiety. While simple in concept, proper breathing requires education and practice.

It is my experience that in my life long history of panic and anxiety attacks, if I do not make a conscious effort to do deep cleansing breaths, the anxiety and stress builds up and then it is too late to use breathing exercises to calm myself. The cortisol, adrenaline, too much carbon dioxide (and not enough oxygen) build up - then comes the anxious/stress feelings. Learning how to breathe properly prevents this from happening - some have even

stopped having anxiety altogether.

The benefits of proper breathing are many. Almost every article on physical and mental health will reference the need for breathing correctly. Yoga exercises are centered on measured breathing technique for mind and body improvement. Stress Managment instructors, voice coaches, athletic coaches, and physical therapists will all direct their students to focus on proper breathing.

A famous Natural Health physician who appears regularly on the Oprah show states, "the most effective and time-efficient relaxation method I know is to practice breathing exercises regularly. My patients have used these simple techniques not only to center themselves but also to address various health problems, from stopping panic attacks to improving digestion.

Learning how to breathe correctly is important - but making that new skill a part of your daily routine is even more important. You know that a good, cleansing breath relaxes you and clears your mind, but how often do you remember to take a full breath? To remind myself to practice breathing, I tried using the alarm on my wristwatch, a kitchen timer in my purse, even a radio station that broadcast the weather every 15 minutes. None of that worked and it was embarassing - I found myself constantly explaining why an alarm kept going off.

Since there wasn't an easy-to-use and discreet reminder device on the market, I found a factory that created one to my specifications. I call it my BreathMinder® - it is a miniature version of a pocket pager with a silent alarm (vibration) that is pre-set to specific intervals. I made sure there was only one control: there are no settings to set, no timer to set, and nothing to reset if the batteries go flat. The switch is recessed so it can't be accidentally turned off. There's even a "nag" alarm built in (so if you miss or ignore the alarm, you get another one a few seconds later.)

I also use it to remember to hydrate (I carry around bottled water, but forget to sip) and remember to stretch (I get "lost" at the computer and forget to take stretch breaks.) My friend uses his BreathMinder® to remember to repeat a positive affirmation he says for a stop smoking program he's on. I designed it for breathing, but I keep hearing about other creative uses people have found. It's small, effective, simple, foolproof, and inexpensive - all the features I wanted!
